SETTING THE SCENE
What defines Falmouth more than anything else is the water surrounding the town. On one side there is the third largest natural harbour in the world, and on the other side, long beaches with rockpools and sand, all within walking distance of the town itself. There is a huge array of water sports on offer, from weekly yacht racing, to gig rowing, paddle-boarding, diving, fishing, surf-lifesaving to name but a few. There are three yacht marinas, besides a whole harbour full of deep-water moorings too. For over 150 years, between 1688 and 1850, Falmouth Packet ships filled what is the harbour as Falmouth became the information hub of the British Empire, second only to London. Now the town even has its own iconic museum right on the water’s edge, in the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.
Facing south towards Falmouth Bay, Woodlane is one of the most sought after and renowned addresses in the town, with elegant terraces of large houses built in the mid-1800’s largely for the captains of the Packet Ships based here at the time. These days Falmouth is also a busy university town with one of the country’s leading media and arts universities, on a magnificent purpose-built campus. A branch railway line operates from Falmouth to Truro, which is on the main London Paddington-Penzance line with overnight ‘sleeper’ service.
THE TOUR
An exceptional, double-fronted period townhouse on one of Falmouth’s most elegant terraces, positioned centrally and facing south towards the sea, with private gardens extending to the front and rear. With spacious accommodation unfolding over three floors, the house is defined by high ceilings, grand proportions and endless original features including sash windows, exposed wooden floors and a turning staircase with galleried landing.
A welcoming entrance hall is flanked by two superb, beautifully appointed reception rooms, each with period fireplaces and a serene ambience. The hall leads through to a generous, open-plan kitchen and breakfast room, which is accompanied by a host of useful utility spaces, including a boot room, cloak/wc and pantry.
Upstairs, four bedrooms (one with en-suite) and a family bathroom are arranged across the first floor, and to the rear, there is an impressive integral artist’s studio and workshop, which flow out on to the terraced garden. A further bedroom and mezzanine living space lie in the eaves on the top floor, with exposed beams and views out across the garden.
STEP OUTSIDE
At the front of the property, an enclosed garden with mature trees and lush shrub borders provides privacy, setting the house back from Woodlane. The attractive rear garden features a charming cobbled courtyard directly behind the house, perfect for alfresco dining, with steps leading up to a series of expansive walled terraces. Mostly laid to lawn, the walled terraces are beautifully stocked with vibrant borders and dotted with tranquil seating areas to enjoy the soft, dappled evening light.
